Best sea food with the best prices. The owner is a great guy who makes you feel right at home. Simple. Fresh. And delicious.

I have been in the Foodservice my entire life and have worked for a major food distributor for ten years. Fish Monger is the place I am looking for when I am searching for incredible food. When you walk in you might think you are walking into a fish market, you are as well as a wonderful dining experience from a very talented chef. The cooler was full of local seafood straight off the boat. They have a great menu, but my wife and I simply picked out our fish from the display case and asked the chef to prepare them how he would like. My grouper and my wife's rockhind was phenomenal. There is something to be said when the chef pulls your fish out of the display case and filets it right in front of you. While we were there many locals came in to purchase fresh and prepared seafood, which says enough. If you are in the area this place is a must! We will be back every trip and before we leave this time.

This is the type of place that you'd hear from the locals as the place to go. Not stuck up or high end. It's like a local mom and pop deli that serves seafood. Extremely nice and friendly. Greeted me as I walked in the door and chatted while checking out with the chef like we were regular friends. First time here and the place lives up to the reviews. Clean and yes not a lot of seating (7-8 tables) but had no problem finding a seat while waiting for carry out. The food is fresh and seasoned perfectly. The crab cake is like a half pound burger in size. The scallops were big also and tasty. The shrimp, fried and steamed were breaded and seasoned just like you'd imagine in a southern cuisine magazine but served in a styrofoam to-go clam shell. Definitely will stop in again when on vacation again. (Next Day) Had one last chance before leaving town to sample the fare and was happy to say I was not let down. Again so friendly and met everyone and we all talked as my basket was prepared. Upon recommendation from the young sous chef :) I ordered the blackened Mahi Po Boy. She cut the chilled fillet right then and there and cooked it to order. It was very tasty and the sauce (like a spicy thousand island) complemented the sandwich very well. Was great with fries too. Now before I left, Louie made me an offer I couldn't refuse on some bacon wrapped shrimp. Not sure if they are on the menu or not but, I am so glad that I got them. The shrimp are awesome but now wrap them in bacon! Alone the taste is just delicious with the spice but then the salty/bacon flavor comes around. He said to add this garlic aioli sauce to the shrimp which just made it crazy good. I will have those next time when in Surfside.

If you want fresh fish and a laid back joint you don't wanna miss this place. Went with a group of 15. Had the trigger, tilapia, flounder, conch fritters, fried oysters and scallops. We all cleaned up. Hottest wasabi I've ever tasted. Staff is very personable and helpful picking food out. You can pick the fish from the cooler.

An unassuming place to find delicious seafood. It looks like they've expanded and now have a bit more seating area. We had a dozen steamed clams ($3.60) and a pound of steamed shrimp ($14) to start. I ordered the scallops, my hubs ordered the Amber Jack blackened and our toddler had chicken fingers. The sides weren't much to write home about (although the coleslaw was yummy) but the fish and seafood was amazing! You can look in the case and then watch them filet it right there. The kids liked that! Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. They get the fish right off the boat and make the menu based on what was caught. Delicious and fresh!

Not much to look at but food is excellent. I had the Tuscan hog snapper with mashed potatoes and corn medley. It was absolutely delicious. Shared the shrimp spring rolls as appetizers which also were great. Nice and crunchy on the outside and full of shrimp. They came with a tahini dipping sauce. The hogsnapper was blackened and had a creamy remoulade sauce on the side. The staff was so concerned about our satisfaction that they interrupted us way too much

This unassuming restaurant and fish monger served the best fish we ate at Murrells Inlet. Its small with only a few tables but the fish is prepared while you wait. Highly recommended if you can skip the frills and alcohol.

It was not good. The crab had a taste and smell of ammonia. If you have read up on this, it come from the meat that has started to decompose. I sent it back and didn't eat any more. My brother had the lobster and it was tough. We heard another customer say the same thing. This reminds me of Kitchen Nightmares, but we were in the before portion of the show.

Gave this place another try and I am willing to up a star from my previous review. Very friendly and both of our entries were tasty and fresh.

Vacationed in Surfside for the first time. My family always cooks up some fresh local seafood one night while we're at the beach. We picked Fish Monger because it was very close, and glad we did. Misty and Lou hooked us up. It's only a dollar extra per pound for the shrimp that's peeled and cleaned. and well worth it. We steamed five pounds and they didn't last long. Misty selected the biggest scallops she could find to make up the five pounds we bought and they were very fresh and delicious. Would like to try some of their other offerings next time. Highly recommended.

Please look past the 1950's hospital colored paint. The fish and shrimp here are made to order! What I mean by that is they have fresh fish on display that they actually filet right in front of you! This ends up being deep fried or grilled to your liking. The meal was delicious.

I've been to a lot of seafood restaurants. I've never tasted better fish that we had here last night. The chef came out and explained all the different types of fresh cuts and the different ways to prepare the fish, e.g.,methods of cooking and different types of spicing. The portions were amazingly large and were cooked to perfection. We had the hog fish, grouper, trigger, mahi, crab cakes and ahi. Absolutely amazing! If only we known about this restaurant the first part of our vacation we would've made several trips back.

The decor is mostly of actual bait, tackle and photos of fishermen friends with their catches. Owner and staff were engaging. Jess was our sweet and friendly waitress full of great recommendations for me and the hubby while dining out minus two kids. She even told me to grab some beer at the Dollar Store next door and offered to keep it cold in their fridge until I needed another. Sweeeet! We ordered the mahi with seasoned fries and garlic grits (wicked good fries, not a huge fan of grits but these were tasty), the fried flounder, fried oysters, 1lb of fried/grilled shrimp and 1lb steamed lobster. Yes, this was for two people ;) we loved the oysters and shrimp especially. Go now, but cross your fingers you beat the Yelpers rush. We tried to go the following night and the place was packed and our order couldn't be filled (Jess was very apologetic). We wish them well and hope they can keep up with the demand and continue churning out quality seafood.

Our family was in town for vacation and found this place on Yelp and decided to give it a try. We almost passed it because the sign is a little understated. Even though it says it is a restaurant that sells bait and tackle I still wasn't ready for it when we walked in. When we walked in I was a little nervous about ordering food here until I saw the food baskets some of the other people had. It looked delicious! While we were getting ready to order the chef pulled out a Grouper and started cutting it. Wow talk about fresh fish!! Everything was pretty good and definitely fresh and not over breaded. The food is the star!!

Louie is a straight talker, with no "beating around the bush". We picked up fix'ins for a signature Cucina Deliciioso Shroba seafood pasta !! If you are in Myrtle beach, do not miss the Fish Monger market to pick up or have lunch or dinner at the market ! I bet you will have a great conversation with Lou and his wife, two very nice people. It's not a restaurant but has great character. Honest, upfront and most interesting people I met in Myrtle beach area . A DO NOT MISS

  • Mike L.

I was highly impressed with the atmosphere there. I had the oyster po' boy for lunch which was killer the home made coleslaw was fantastic and I highly recommend getting the beignets after they were off the hook. The folks there were really great. Cannot wait to check out the dinner menu.

Two stars only because the food was very tasty...but that is where the positives end. Shrimp and fish baskets had surprisingly small amounts of protein for a $13 price ($9 lunch baskets at Bubba's Fish Shack had more). Tables and staff clothing were all quite dirty. Our fried fish was falling apart and when they brought them to us they apologized and said we would get 10% off...we offered for them to just remake and they declined. At the end of the meal the waitress asked for feedback, and we just casually mentioned the portion sizes were smaller than anticipated...which the waitress told the cook (owner?), and in front of me paying at the counter started making a scene about how he thinks the portions are more than enough, etc (the waitress even asked him to stop embarrassing her...though he was really embarrassing himself and the establishment). Sad to have so many negatives when the food tasted good... We will never return.

This place and the people who work there are all hidden treasures. Louie and Misty are wonderful people who do a tremendous job of making you feel like family and making wonderful dishes at a reasonable price.we have stopped there every year for a long time.this is always the first place to visit when we come to town.It is also the first place we recommend to friends visiting Myrtle Beach.Stop there once and you will be sure to come back again and again.

You will not find better seafood in Myrtle Beach! The owner and chief trained at cordon blue in London. Please look past the decor and walk in this wonderful place. . If your looking for a local place with freak seafood this is the place to go! . I'm so sorry we ever went any other place to eat and if we're staying another day we would have gone back for lunch and dinner.. DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE!!!

Don't let appearances deceive - looks like bait n tackle shop. Food is fresh n we'll- prepared. Chef Louie very entertaining. BYOB. Yummy!

When first entering the restaurant you don't have high expectations but be prepared for a nice surprise. The waitresses were very friendly and accommodating to our group of seven with an infant. We started with an appetizer of lobster mac and cheese with remoulade sauce. It was delicious! We ordered fried flounder, fried shrimp, fried grouper, chicken strips, grilled flounder po' boy seasoned with Tuscan garlic on homemade roll, and grilled Tuscan garlic shrimp. Everything we ate was exceptionally prepared. We enjoyed all the food and the sauces were all great. The mango habanero sauce was delicious. When paying our bill the chef asked how we enjoyed our meal and we discussed how he made some of the sauces and seasonings. The chef then proceeded to give me a sampling of the Tuscan garlic. The only drawback to the restaurant was the air conditioning had a difficult time keeping the dining area cool.

I was ready for crab soup but was told that they no longer sell crab soup...I was then directed to a kind man that the board on the left was a listing of their specials...right away I noticed that they had conch fritters which I love so I ordered them...There was a short wait and I was told how good the food was there...This being my 1st time I was excited. ..plus I saw all of the great cudos this place got from YELP...When I got home I tasted one and was so disappointed. ..the conch was way over cooked and rubbery. ...I called back to report to the person I spoke to at the register airing my complaint. ..and without hesitation. .I was told that conch is rubbery. ..which I know it not to be....Instead of arguing that point...I stated that those were my views and that was that...the male that I spoke to stated that he would keep my issue in mind and....well...Needless to say. ..I won't return. ..I hate wasting money...it's too hard to come by...

The best seafood ever. Can't get any fresher than swimming in the ocean the night before. Louie and the staff treat you like family.

The reviews don't lie .......fresh delicious seafood. Owner and staff were very friendly. Owner even gave us a piece of pizza from Surfside pizza. We had our own buffet for dinner. Grilled and fried shrimp, fried and broiled scallops, clam strips, grilled halibut, and crab legs.

Fresh local seafood perfectly prepared. Delightful staff. Family friendly. Limited seating. Fine restaurant quality food in a very casual setting with reasonable prices. Highly recommended!

I will happily support this local restaurant every year for our family beach vacation. My parents were shocked how amazing the food was. I love finding little places like this! I had the special crab stuffed tilapia and I was surprised how great it really was. And their "famous" crab dip is to die for!

  • Kiki T.

What can I say that all the other reviews haven't said? Don't be fooled by the exterior and give this place a try! Everything was delicious. My husband and I went a bit crazy and got lobster, crab legs, clams and shrimp. Simple, artisanal and skillful preparation plus just-out-of-boat freshness make a winning recipe. Everything was finger licking good, quite literally. I don't think I can ever go back to seafood buffets. Between the 2 of us it was only 68 dollars and it was well worth it. Thank you yelp, I would never have tried this place without you. The food was amazing, the hosts are welcoming and sincere, the memory will be everlasting. Thank you Chef Louie and we will see you everytime we come to Surfside beach. Check out their Facebook page for daily dinner specials!

We had crab dip, grilled grouper and fried oysters. The dip is the reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 - not sure there was any grab in it at all, or anything besides melted cheese. It made me say "oh boy, I " hope we didn't make a mistake coming here". But then we got the grouper and the oysters. Both were excellent. My husband said the grouper was the best he's ever had. The oysters were huge, perfectly cooked with just the right amount of breading and seasoning. Would definitely recommend this place.

Fish Monger definitely lives up to the reviews. I went for the first time yesterday after getting terrible "fresh" fish from another shop. It isn't much to look at from the outside for sure but the girl who helped us was friendly and answered all of my questions. They had a great selection of fresh fish but in the end I bought a pound of raw tuna steaks. I seared them with just a little seasoning and lemon and they were delicious! Looking forward to trying the prepared food. I'll absolutely be back!

Fantastic Fresh Seafood Just finished dinner, which was terrific, superb scallops and wonderful grouper, about as fresh as you can get and not get your feet wet. Not much to look at, but you can't eat decor. A quiet night, we spent time talking to the owner, his wife and two daughters. Even got a tip for a great restaurant in Charleston, our next stop. It may be a hole in the wall, but this hole has a great kitchen. TRY IT!

Very fast seating on a Friday night even. Waitress was excellent and suggested two great fish dishes for my wife & I. Will certainly be back!!!

GUY FIERI, YOU MUST VISIT 'The Fish Monger!" What a gem! Known best by the locals as the place to get the freshest of seafood available, whether you are taking home to cook for yourself or ordering a meal to eat there or take-home after a day of fun in the sun. I Love their fish hog snapper bites when in season and they always provide recommendations on availability and I have enjoyed other really great fish options. pst...ask about the roumalade sauce, awesome!). Ambience keeps this gem hidden as is not the flashy, glitzy place that reels in tourists...but oh, they are missing out! Please note that I am not related to anyone at this venue and am truly a lover of fresh seafood and spreading the word to other lovers of the sea!

Absolutely the BEST seafood we have had in a long time. The place is very casual and the people who run it are super friendly and obviously love what they do. Fresh seafood prepared excellently and priced fairly.,,..what more could you ask for?

If you're looking for FRESH fantastic seafood, this is the place! You can actually see the food being cut and prepared. All seafood is caught and served within 72 hours - no frozen fish here. The mahi mahi was some of the freshest and best we've ever eaten. Staff is very friendly. Some of the food we ordered was shrimp po boy, mahi mahi po boy, flounder, and wasabi scallops. Everyone raved about how good the food was. We ordered chicken fingers for the kids and each basket had 3 huge chicken fingers (small breasts size) and fries. The seafood baskets came with fries and coleslaw which were good but unfortunately there were no other options for sides. Note: there is nothing fancy about this place. Like the other reviews say, you have to look past the bait and tackle storefront but it's worth it! The inside is rather small currently so there are not many tables and chairs and no high chairs but we were told they are planning on expanding seating (including high chairs) for 2015 season.

Great place for fresh seafood! Nice family owned and run restaurant and seafood market with fresh local seafood. The owner and waitress were so friendly and the food was the best seafood we have had so far. Way better and half the price of other establishments. We will definitely be hitting this place again before we leave.

  • Brandi M.

I you want local authentic food then this is the place to go!!! Very happy with the food and it was priced at a very reasonable rate. I had to wait a little longer but it was worth it!!! Louie was super friendly and he knows how to cook great seafood. This is not your typical touristy place to eat.

  • Iknow B.

I could eat here every day while here on vacation. Oh that's right, I DID! Louie, wife, and staff do it right. Fresh fish. Need I say more? Ok. Preparation is wonderful. You must understand seafood to prepare it properly and Louie and company do exactly that. I had outstanding haddock fish and chips style, grouper, tile fish, oysters, etc. House-made tartar and other unique sauces to accompany these tasty ocean gems. I really miss Fish Monger now but I'll be back!

  • Chrissy M.

My family and I found this place on Yelp and went there for our last day of vacation. It really is as good as all the reviews have said. We had the scallops, shrimp and grouper baskets and they were excellent. The owner talked to us for quite some time and was a really cool guy. A young kid that didn't normally wait tables took our order because the regular servers weren't there yet, and he was very sweet and did a great job. We will definitely be back next time we're in the area.

  • Katina H.

This place is amazing! The food is top notch and everyone who works here is super friendly. If you are looking for a sit down experience, this is not it. This is a fish market with a few tables for people who want to sit and eat. We went there for lunch and had the grouper po boy and the crab cake po boy. I don't think either of us have ever had such a good sandwich before. The chef came to talk to us and it was obvious he knows what he's doing. Give the place a chance with an open mind. You won't be sorry!!!

My family and I spent a week in Myrtle Beach, and in our last night there we decided to try this place due to the good reviews on Yelp. We were very impressed with the food, and the wait staff was extremely nice even though we came in right before they closed. The chef/owner came out and talked to us about a couple of the dishes, he was really nice and very personable. We had a variety of their dishes amongst the 8 of us; the conch fritters and crab dip to start the meal were very good! I highly recommend either if not both. The grilled shrimp basket was very good, as were the fried scallops. I had the garlic crab, they were amazing! The chef said it was his late aunt's recipe, she must have been a great cook!! They were seasoned and cooked perfectly! I would recommend sharing though. Finally the beignets, OMG, they were terrific! Coated in powdered sugar (as any good beignet should be) served hot, and absolutely delicious!! This is the kind of local place that my family and I love to find!

  • Debra E.

We were not deterred by the outside, the inside was clean but sparse with no atmosphere, however, we have experienced fantastic meals from similar places. We had the grilled scallops with wasabi sauce and the seared Ahi with mango habanero sauce. The wasabi was placed on the scallops and grossly overpowered the taste of the scallops. The scallops themselves were not the best we have had. The Ahi was was overcooked and very dry, the mango sauce did not go well with the tuna at all. The seared tuna, though overcooked, had very good flavor. The service was very good and the prices were good, but, we will not be going back.

    (1)
  • Jeff R.

Blackened grouper Po Boy was excellent. Conch fritters were good as well. We'll return again before we leave for the week. Almost all the fish is local and caught that morning!

Oh my goodness, what a GEM of a place. The best service the best food and you would never ever even know it by walking up to the place. I went with my wife and kids and they did not want 2 go in. After I went in and talked to the owner I had to go out side and convince my family to go back inside and give it a try. Boy am I glad that we did go back in, this place is amazing like everyone else says do not go in for the ambience go for top quality food. The mash potatoes and French fries and Cole slaw were awsome sides. The scallops were perfect, the shrimp both grilled and fried also perfect. And to the star of the show, the grouper. It was AMAZING. I am glad I got to experience this place. It felt like we were eating at a friends house. The girls were very friendly and the owner very accommodating. I live 450 miles away and I will make it a point to come back for the weekend often just to eat here. Yes that good.

Great low key joint with lots of personality. A hole in the wall but a great one at that. The fish is cut to order and made just feet away. The chef was a scream. Great personality. Loves what he does and it shows. I had a grouper basket and the shrimp basket. Both were fresh and delicious. Glad we stopped in.

This place is as cool as the backside of your pillow! The fresh fish and specials are great. What they lack in the frills at most "restaurants" you gain in quality, taste, and price. If you like corporate restaurants with no soul, don't drop by. This place doesn't need your vibe, plus the chef might just tell you like it is (which you'll deserve). I love this place and all that it represents complete with hot sauce and a roll of paper towels on the table. We'll be back!

    (5)
  • Lisa D.

Absolutely nothing bad to say about this place. Portions are large and prices are reasonable. I ordered the seared ahi tuna with mango habanero and it was AMAZING! my mom ordered the grouper poboy and that was delicious as well! HUGE portions! We are definitely satisfied! We also split a lb of steamed oysters that were scrumptious! This small seafood joint is a MUST when visiting the myrtle beach/ surf side area

I ordered the ahi tuna & my husband had a trigger fish po boy. the fish was cooked perfectly. The owner and his family were very personable and friendly. great overall experience we will be back.

We were in town for a mini-vacation, and came across this hidden gem. It's really hidden, because we almost walked out thinking we're in the wrong shop. However looks can be deceiving. We walked in and were immediately greeted by a very personable young woman. She definitely lights up a room with her personality. She took our orders. I ordered the Seared Ahi w/ Mango Habanero sauce basket and my husband ordered the David's Flounder basket. Let me say, this food hit our seafood- craving palettes. It definitely hit the spot. Both baskets came with homemade coleslaw and French fries. We even ordered a crab cake to share. Guess what! The cook used fresh crab and it was delicious. We were definitely pleased with the food. If we get to come back to Myrtle Beach, this will definitely be one of our spots to visit.

If you are wanting local fresh seafood this is definitely the place to go! Louie was very friendly and cooks some excellent food! My wife had the grouper po boy and I had the shrimp basket and both were excellent! We will definitely recommend to any friends that are visiting the area and will definitely come back if we ever come back to Myrtle Beach!

This is a great spot to get a meal or buy fresh seafood. The fried shrimp and crab dip are the best! We eat here every time we are at the beach! Great food!!

Go see Louie and he will take care of you with some very personal service. I have never had a bad meal here. Everything is fresh and cooked to order. May not have the look from the outside, but all that matters is the service and the food. Believe me, it is worth coming in.

  • Emily P.

We loved it! Found out about it on Yelp and saw the awesome reviews! When we got there we were a little unsure. As we walked into it I was still very hesitant. But after ordering and getting our food I was beyond shocked at how amazing it was. Hot and fresh and simply yummy. It's not too far from where we stay so we will be returning. I had a shrimp po-boy sandwich and the fresh baked bread was one of my favorite parts of the sandwich. (Besides the shrimp!!) the cole slaw and fries were amazing as well. Wish we had a place this good back home. A must try for any seafood lover!!!!

  • Alta M.

Went on the recommendations from Yelp. If you want atmosphere, go elsewhere. I you want good food at a reasonable ($12-17 entree) price, this is the place. I had almond crusted grouper with garlic mashed potatoes and a corn and black bean medley which was wonderful. The sauce they serve it with was unique and very tasty. (a combination of soy sauce, maple syrup and cayenne, I think) My hubbie had fried scallops that were tender, sweet and plentiful. Many customers came in just to buy fresh seafood to take home and cook. I didn't want the mess, and I'm glad I let them cook for me!

GO SEE LOUIE. for best clams ever.... and plus he has the best and freshest seafood. we make sure to visit him every year while on vacation for our first and last day evening dinners. quick easy and awesome. highly recommended!!!!. 100 clams and a couple of steam pots.

I live in garden city and have never tried their Fried flounder. Very nice people but when I asked for hush puppies, they said the owner doesn't like them so they aren't offered. The fish didn't have much meat and was very mushy. The fries were mediocre and the slaw was ok. Would prefer a McDonald's fish sandwich

  • Susan H.

Is just a fish market for fresh seafood with a few tables. Thought we might have made a mistake... Then our food came! Unbelievably good! !! Beat shrimp I have ever eaten hands down. Dont let appearances keep you from having a fantastic meal.

  • Deedee O.

This place was awesome! Fresh fish, they even offered to cook something out of the case if it wasn't on the menu. Everything was cooked when we ordered it, and exactly how you wanted it. This place is great, no gimmicks or fancy crap. The food is just amazing, there isn't much else to the place but you'll definitely find me on there again

The fried oysters and King crab legs are almost as fantastic as the service. A must go. Can BYOB too! Looks like a dive but tastes like a 5 star place.

This was basically a baseball trip to Myrtle Beach. We ate at Captain George's Seafood Buffet which was basically Golden Coral with crab legs. It was OK. We also went to Rioz which is a Brazilian Steak House and it was average, salty and not like the Brazilian Steak Houses we are accustom to. We also ate at many other places that where super pricey, but lack lustered in flavor. We are from IL and we have a great array of food to choose from. This hole in the wall was by far the BEST and I am from the coastal region of Peru, so I know what the difference of fresh and good flavour when it come to seafood. The ladies who work their seem happy and gave me more attention and direction on what to order than any 5 star restaurant. This alone made my family feel at home. I had the grouper which was grilled and it came veggies and rice to die for (Peruvians love rice). My eldest child who is 17 and super duper critical when it comes to food ate not only his fish, but some of his sister's also. He gave it a thumbs up which in my opinion is hard to get. The place sells bait and fishing stuff and has it's fresh fish in the display case. It is really deceptive and I actually felt sorry for this group of people that judged this place based on it's look and left. I believe it is fine the way it is, "outside of the box". Louie, who for me will be called Chef does an amazing job with the dishes he puts out. Keep in mind the dishes are in baskets lined with aluminium foil, but the fish inside is delicous. You can have your fish prepared a number of ways. This Chef is thoughtful on how he prepares his dish. I totally enjoyed my dish and the hospitality that is missing in many high end establishments. The price was super right compared to what is out there. Do not miss the opportunity of getting fresh fish made to order. My husband and our other children ages 9, 13, and 14 loved their fish and enjoyed Chef coming to out table. Chef, your place made the end to our Vacation the BEST and I am a very critical person when it comes to seafood. Your deceptive storefront caught me by surprise and when we comeback to Myrtle Beach we are headed straight to the Fish Monger Seafood Bait and Tackle. P.S. I will call you ahead of time for Ceviche : )

We had a fantastic meal here today. My husband and I had the cobia special served with jasmine rice and local vegetables. Everything was so fresh. The teenagers had the Ahi tuna basket. The tuna portion was amazing for the price and it also was delicious. This place is a hidden gem and way better than the place we ate at in Murrells Inlet. The store like atmosphere is nothing to be afraid of, the food is worth it. In addition, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful explaining their offerings. I am glad it is only day 2 of our week trip so we can go back.

We discovered this place from recommendations on Yelp and it was the eating highlite of the entire trip. We enjoyed it so much we came back a second time. Despite the plain looks of the place, the food was as good as I have had in fine dining establishments. The staff was super friendly and even the owner came out and chatted with us. The prices were extremely reasonable for the quality of food you are getting. Skip the buffet and get real seafood. This place is awesome.

My husband and I managed to get a night out without the kids during our vacation. We wanted fresh local seafood and weren't interested in going to a chain. We had passed this place quite a few times on prior trips, but were surprised to see the awesome reviews. We were pretty hungry, so we ordered a lot! My hubby wanted fried oysters, I wanted crab dip, we couldn't pass up the tilapia and Chef Louie recommended the grouper. The crab dip was wonderful...so much so that we forgot our table manners. I was horrified when the chef caught me mid-bite with crab dip dripping down my chin. The fried oysters and grouper were fresh and cooked to perfection. The lemon pepper tilapia with the blueberry sauce and chipotle couscous seemed like an odd combination, but it was incredible! We were there near closing time, so we got some one on one time with the chef which added to the great experience of the night!

In one word, excellent. We had lunch one day and had to go back the next day for dinner. Louie definitely takes joy in personally pleasing each and every customer. If it's not on the menu just ask. Louie will make it the way you want it. Don't miss this hole in the wall place. It doesn't look like much when you walk in but you won't be disappointed.

This is exactly the kind of place we were looking for in Surfside- the ambiance is that of a local fish place and the quality is as good as it gets. The prices are better than reasonable especially considering the quality. I only wish I'd known about this place earlier in our short stay in Surfside Beach. This place is worth driving a fair bit too. The owner and his friends are characters and lots of fun to converse with. You can learn a lot about the area just from chatting with them. Next time I am in the area, this is the FIRST place I will go to eat.

I have never had food this good ever. Going on vacation or heading out to eat back home were you know where everything is you will not find a better place to eat. If your looking for a fancy place suit and tie and absorbent prices go else were. This is the best food that you will ever grace your lips, and the price is better than your middle of the road local restaurant. I said better food and better price. If your a local don't tell people about this place because you won't be able to eat here ever again. Best food I have ever Eaton ever for the money.ever

I'm not a seafood person (except for sushi). However, the food was excellent - fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The decor belies the quality of the food. I highly recommend this place, and am going back before leaving Myrtle Beach.

If you want the best oyster po boy you've ever had, stop in and see Louie. Not only is he an excellent chef, he has a wealth of knowledge about local fishing and is a super nice guy. When you think of a real local seafood place this should be what you picture in your mind.

My wife read the reviews on here and we decided to give it a try. When we got there we looked at each other and wondered if we were in the wrong place because of the way it looked. Don't let the looks of the place bother you, the food here is awesome! It is a small family business, but, the food will rival most any seafood restaurant in the murrells inlet area and we have ate at most of them.

Wow wow wow. I didn't think that food this great existed in the Myrtle Beach area. Fantastic, fresh, and delicious fish. Louis was very friendly and told us about the specials and how they were prepared. His wife works the front of the house and she was very nice, bringing my kids some candy at the end of the meal. This is a family-run business -- hard to find in this area. We even ordered chicken fingers for the kids, which they ignored completely in favor of the fish. I live in NYC, and it's hard to find food this good even there. Can't wait to go back.

The owner of this seafood market is from New York, and man he sells some fresh fish! We ordered the halibut, and he fried it for us. We also got some salmon and he prepared it in an awesome way with lemon and herbs. This is some of the best tasting fish ever. For the fish that is not local, he has it shipped in ASAP from Alaska, Massachusetts, and the like.

Great place to pick up seafood or get a bite to eat. I got some local shrimp and grouper and they were both super fresh and reasonably priced for this area. We will be going back!

  • John F.

This was not a very good seafood store. A nice enough proprietor, but with a tendency towards sales pitchy BS. I mean, when you're looking at grouper in the case and they obviously have very cloudy eyes and then the guy says "these were swimming in the ocean at 3am", it's just icky. He had an uncomfortable way about it that suggested he was more interested in selling you whatever than your having a great seafood experience. The swordfish they sold us was leathery and tough. Anyone who has ever had fresh swordfish knows what a disappointment steak-like swordfish is. It is actually a delicate and very sweet fish. This was fishy and tough. The shrimp we bought were okay. All in all disappointed. And disappointed in general trying to find decent seafood at Seaside. If we had not been in such a rush and if there had been any place else to go we wouldn't have bothered rolling the dice with this store. Mediocre at best.

If you have a kitchen in MB then drive as fast as you can to Fish Monger Seafood. Much of the seafood is from local fisherman only a few miles from the store. Other seafood is available from greater distances to provide variety. Any seafood you want is here or the owner will order it for you. Louis is the usual attendant and a nicer man cannot be found. He prepares fish cakes, crab cakes, sauces, steamer pots, and knows his business. I came here last Christmas for a steamer pot and today when I walked in Louis remembered me. I bought shrimp and clams for a boil and homemade remoulade. There are a few things that bring me back to this area--the natural coastal beauty, Brookgreen Gardens, and Fish Monger Seafood. They have a strong pull on me when I sit down to plan my December vacation. I may never see Galveston or Eureka Springs at this rate.

Have been there twice and both times the food was excellent! Had the fried fillet meal the first time and my wife had the fried shrimp meal. Both could not have been better. Next, I had the fried scallop meal and my wife had a special pistachio encrusted grouper. Again both meals could not have been better. If you're looking for atmosphere this is not the place for you. If what you want is fresh seafood, cooked perfectly then this is the place for you. While we're in Myrtle Beach all of our seafood dinners will be coming from here!

  • Tommy B.

I love good fish and I'm not interested in waiting in line at one of the many overpriced fried seafood buffet tourist traps in the area. I stopped at a few seafood markets in Murrells Inlet -- they all looked great, but none of them had a grill and I didn't want to cook. I was ready to give up when I happened upon Fishmonger Seafood. If you're looking for a fancy dining experience or a gimmicky themed restaurant this is not the place for you. If you're not crazy about the fish market smell or the minimal atmosphere you can get it to go. They offer some sandwiches and baskets on the menu, but I've found you can get anything you want cooked any way you like. I liked being able to ask what's fresh and get my fish grilled to go with no sides or extras. There is a small fridge with a selection of sides, sauces, dips, and sodas. My only disappointment was that I didn't discover it sooner. If you're in the area give them a try. I cannot recommend this place enough.

  • Cheri T.

This place isn't much to look at, and the displays do not give a good idea of the quality and depth of what they have. Louie, the proprietor, owns his own fishing boats (trawler and dive boats), and is a cordon bleu trained chef, so he knows both his fish and his cooking. Don't get turned off by the artless display case, just ask what they have in. They also cater.

  • Peter B.

Friendly service and all the ambiance you'd expect from a fish market with a few tables set up haphazardly in some dead space. Fish was high quality -- definitely not cheap but a reasonable value in a tourist town. Definitely more for foodies looking for fresh fish without a wait at the door than a place to take a hot date.

This was our first trip to myrtle beach as a family, and we decided to pass up the tourist trap seafood buffets in the area for this "off the beaten path" seafood joint. The food was top notch - I ate the grouper po' boy and others had the blackened wahoo, african pompano and shrimp. All were very tasty and well cooked. The staff here is over the top welcoming. THe owner came and checked in multiple times, the cook was the initial person taking our order and was able to answer the zany questions from my family, and my one year old was allowed to "run wild" with the other kids there and play with some toys they had set out. Like the other reviews say, don't be deceived by first impression- the place could use a face lift, but the bait shop atmosphere is charming. Also, they let us BYOB, and that's what really brought it up to 5/5 for our stay.

Another amazing local find from Yelp. This family-owned hole-in-the-wall cooks up some great seafood. They were attentive and friendly. We had the Mango Habanero Mahi, Garlic Sriracha Shrimp and three clusters of Snow Crab legs. We enjoyed it all. Definitely be back when we're in town again. Don't be worried about the strip mall location or decor - it is the real deal.

We went because of the reviews on Yelp, and the great reviews were right! Louie and our waitress were really friendly and answered all our questions. My wife and I had the trigger fish which is a local fish. It was great. Louie let us watch him filet it after he pulled the fresh fish from the deli case. They give you many options for how you can have your food prepared and gave us good answers when we asked what was best for trigger fish. This is a place that is not very fancy, with great food at a nice price. The fish is fresh and they'll tell you where it came from and answer all your questions. Louie even told us a fish story and showed us the pic of a huge fish! I loved this place and would recommend it.

Great seafood Dive. Not much on the menu- except fresh catch. Had the oysters. fresh, plump and meaty. Old bay topping. Owner and his daughter were very nice and engaging. Can drinks, fresh seafood for take out. Family biz with god product.

No matter what you think of the exterior, if you turn away from this place because of that, you are going to miss out on the best seafood place in the area. Read AliL's review, it is spot on.

  • Don J.

We stopped here based on the Yelp reviews, and we were not disappointed. Don't let the look of the place keep you from some amazing fresh seafood. We had some of the best big fresh fried oysters I have ever tasted, great coleslaw, and the crab dip is out of this world. Every dish was excellent and fresh as you can get. The owner and staff were a pleasure to talk with, and made suggestions and answered questions about the dishes. We wanted to try several seafood restaurants while we were there, but I wish we had just went back here for our meals. It was that good. We will be returning each time we are back in Myrtle Beach.

One must pass two challenges of judgment before savoring the glory that is the food at Fish Monger: Challenge #1: DO NOT keep driving when you see the outward appearance of this place. Set in a more rundown area south of Myrtle, and looking absolutely nothing like the neon lights and mega tourist food factories that flag the city's strip, this place is one of two businesses in a small strip mall...its neighbor being Dollar General. Challenge #2: DO NOT turn on your heel as you walk into Fish Monger. As its name suggests, its interior appears as a bait & tackle shop with a handful of tables and booths on either side. If you made it this point, congrats! You will be rewarded supremely with the best seafood north of Florida and south of the Maryland coast! My family and I try to seek out the local favorites whilst on vacation, and a suggestion from our condo rental office clerk brought us here. We had to drive 25 minutes out from Myrtle but it was absolutely worth it! I had a few questions about the daily special and the chef himself came out to answer them. Also, this is a family-owned restaurant, by which I mean dad cooks and the kids wait the tables. This place also serves only locally caught fish... More delicious and fresh than I expected! After ordering, we watched as our fish was removed from the front case and fileted before our eyes! My stuffed catfish was cooked to perfection, the fish n chips were a crispy brown (battered in cracker meal rather than corn meal, much to my dad's girlfriend's approval) and the po' boys were meaty hunks of fish layered between a crispy, fresh baked roll. I also really appreciated the honesty that they were out of the haddock they use for the fish n chips (due to fresh seasonal availability) and the sever told us they're substituting with tilapia instead. Most places would've passed this off as haddock and no one would be the wiser due to a thick and greasy coating, but this was the freshest and lightest fish n chips I've ever savored! If ever I find myself returning to myrtle, you better believe I'll be returning to the Fish Monger!

Let me start by saying the food here is fresh and delicious. Kathryn met me at the register with a smile. I asked what was good and she responded that it all is. I ended up ordering the sirachi snapper special with rice, veggies and creole grilled shrimp. The fish is so fresh that Kathryn brought the fish to the chef to filet right after I ordered it! I would classify this as a five star dive so please don't come here expecting an ocean view and a fancy interior then leave a crappy review. This is certainly a fresh fish market that, luckily for you, makes amazing seafood too. I'm already trying to figure out how I can come back again before my business trip is over!

Just visited for the first time and can only say, delicious. We are here for a week and I am sorry we waited as this is definitely a repeat visit. Had the blackness wahoo and scallops, both were a delight.

Great dinner. Planned on getting the Monger Pot but it needs to be ordered about two hours in advance. Had the Trigger Fish, Salmon, Conk Fritters and 2lbs of mussels and everything was perfect. We'll be trying the Monger Pot for sure in a couple days.

We started off with the crab dip - per the waitresses' recommendation- EXCELLENT! We had blackened grouper po'boy, fried shrimp basket, fried oyster basket, and wasabi seared scallops. Would recommend to everyone! Loved the remoulade sauce on the blackened grouper. The batter on the fried seafood is light and cooked perfectly. Seared scallops were delicious and the wasabi is optional! No doubt we will be back with each trip to Garden City! Small amount of seating - 6 booths and 3 tables. In off season we were seated with no wait. It is a seafood market, so you may notice a fishy smell... Not overwhelming. All fresh seafood! YUMMY! Went back a few days later for lunch - very consistent- and by that I mean YUMMY! I told the owner we wished we lived closer ;) he told us they ship!!! Now that's definitely worth considering!!!

Looks are deceiving, one may drive by without ever giving it a second look but that would be a mistake. This place is great!! I had to make a second visit before wrapped up my vacation. I recommend the steamed shrimp, perfectly steamed and seasoned. Also, the shrimp po'boy and seared ahi tuna are a must. Very friendly staff as well.

  • Mark C.

Don't let the looks fool you, this place has the best and freshest seafood we've had in years. I had the oyster po' boy and my wife steamed shrimp. I'm not exaggerating when I say they were both perfect. Yes, perfect. And the coleslaw was incredible as well. Add to that the fact that the staff was the friendliest we experienced our entire time on vacation. We are actually looking forward to coming back to Myrtle Beach just so we can eat here again.

First time here and loved it. Food was very fresh and great taste. The entire family was happy with the food; my 5 year old ate almost a lb of shrimp by herself ( not popcorn version either). We are definitely coming back and keeping this on our restaurant list for next year. Follow the advice from previous comments and don't pass over due to appearances alone.

This is our second year back at Fish Mongers and as usual was well worth the wait. After enjoying it so much last year while staying in Oceanside Village, we definitely planned on returning this year. Our first visit was on Monday evening and the clams, shrimp dumplings, scallops, and seared Jack were wonderful as usual. We decided to return on Wednesday since the tides this year have not been our friend and we could plan a pool day and come in "early". Louis and Misty were warm and inviting as usual and again, the clams were NOT a disappointment and the seared ahi tuna was melt in your mouth!! All of the staff at Fish Monger's is wonderful and Louis and Misty are two of the nicest people that you could ask to meet in Surfside Beach or anywhere. While tomorrow may be a long day at the beach, we will surely be back on Friday to enjoy one last time before heading home. By the way, if you want something that is on the menu but prepared slightly different, just ask, their goal is to have happy customers and make what they want to eat!!

To say we were a bit scared when we walked in would be an understatement. As we sat there waiting for our food, I likened the place to being in a Bob's Burgers episode...dad cooks while mom waits tables, kids running around wanting to help, not many customers, etc. I'm so glad we trusted all the Yelpers and tried something new for dinner. I can't remember the last time we had fish this fresh while at the beach. The mahi and grouper were pulled from the counter and cut into portion size right in front of us.The mahi was a dinner special that came with a peach bbq sauce and rice and veggies. The sauce was very a tasty compliment to the fish, enhancing the flavor instead of overpowering it. The rice and veggies were average (at best). Both the mahi and grouper were blackened and cooked to perfection. The oysters in the fried oyster basket were huge and lightly breaded, so the taste of oyster was prominent. This is a big plus when most places around here interpret calabash style to mean "so much breading you can't taste anything else". It came with fries and slaw. We counted 14 shrimp in the fried shrimp basket. The breading on the shrimp was different than the oyster breading; more spice than flour but still just as good. We substituted onion rings for the fries and they were light and plentiful. We all cleaned our plates and were already talking about what we would order the next time we come. If you are a local, this place should be your regular stop for fresh seafood. If you are a tourist, this should be at the top of your itinerary.

Yelp led us here and yelp was right. At first my mother (who lives in Myrtle Beach) was trying to get us to go elsewhere because this hardly looks like a restaurant from the outside. The food on the inside was wonderful though.

Imagine a fish market that will prepare anything available almost any way you want. First and foremost it is and looks like a fish market, so don't expect fancy decor, a water view, late night dining or inflated prices. It is an excellent fish market with a very helpful staff. They have a large selection of seafood featuring local. We saw shrimp, flounder, snapper, salmon, grouper, clams, mussels and others. We had lunch consisting of a grilled shrimp basket and fish & chips from jack crevalle (look it up). The shrimp were lightly spiced an perfectly cooked. The jack was lightly breaded and perfectly fried. The fries accompanying both were ordinary commercial preparations. The slaw was good with the typical southern mayonnaise dressing. They do not serve alcohol but welcome your bringing some. Service was excellent and friendly. I do wish they would move to Murrells Inlet with a water view but that would probably ruin it. I hesitated to write this review as seating is limited and I don't want it to get crowded.

If you're not into seafood buffets and want something fresh you have to check this place out. Great friendly, family run restaurant. Very simple atmosphere, which I appreciate, and the food was the very definition of fresh as the cook prepares your fish as ordered on the spot. My wife and I ordered crab-stuffed tilapia with wasabi and garlic mashed potatoes with veggies and we both left more than satisfied.

Steamed shrimp with old bay cooked to perfection. Blackened Grouper was amazing! My husband's grouper po' boy too! (And his cole slaw was really good) My son had the cheeseburger and loved it. Chef and family run this gem! Only here till Friday, hoping to get back again!

Excellent fresh seafood, which was a bit hard to find in the area. We had fresh haddock fish and chips style as well as a side filet of flounder. It is a nice touch when your fresh filet is cut , dredged, and fried in front of you. The kids as well as mom and dad were very pleased with the meal. Another plus is that you can byob which was a welcome surprise! We will eat here a few times before our trip is done.

I was happy to find this place while visiting Myrtle Beach. I wanted seafood, but didn't want to deal with a regular restaurant with a party of 5 including 2 kids. It can be extremely expensive, especially when everyone in your group is not into seafood. So I drove down to Surfside Beach and found this to be a great alternative if you want to take food back to wherever you are staying. They have seating inside, but it has more of a carryout feel to the place. I ordered 4lbs of snow crab legs and 1lb steamed shrimp. Everything was delicious and cost approximately $60 with my Yelp check in offer. I will definitely return in the future. 4 Stars!

Very good very fresh seafood. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They care. Our recommendation is to take their advice on what to eat and how to cook it. We had snapper and sea bass. Easily the best tasting seafood we remember eating.

Talk about a hole in the wall. I would probably give it 4.5 stars but regardless, you are getting good food for a pretty decent price. Walking in, there's not much room for sitting. Lot of people ordered takeout I later saw. However, I overheard the waitress say they were getting rid of the tackle section and expanding the dine-in options. I got the fried oyster po-boy. Very good stuff. Nice seasoning, good flavor, decent bun. Friend got the grouper sandwich which he said was really good. Large portion. Fries were pretty decent. Kids got the fish and chips. Decent. Not much of a batter on the fish, if so, pretty thin one but might have just been flour and seasoning. Otherwise the fish quality was good but don't expect a typical pub type batter on the fish. Also got 3 dozen clams for $3.60/dozen. What a deal. Seemed like they sprinkled some old bay on top and some melted butter to dip in. Decent sized clams, good chew and flavor. My wife doesn't eat seafood so she got the pulled pork sandwich which was decent. Nothing to write home about. Served with a standard tomato-based sauce, not vinegar. All in all, this is a place you can come to pig out for relatively cheap and the quality will be 10x better than any buffet.

Literally, the first stop after we landed! Crab dip and bread to eat poolside-delicious! The service is awesome and so friendly. The kitschy decor, coupled with the charisma of the staff make it feel homey and all the while you get the freshest seafood prepared by an amazing chef. Thanks Louie!

What a hidden gem. It doesn't look like much from the outside, and it isn't spectacular inside, but the food was so good! Great for fresh seafood when you don't want to drive all the way down to murrells inlet! They also have a huge selection of lunch and dinner options, and the staff is so friendly. I got steamed LOCAL shrimp, steamed clams and fried scallops basket.
